The Directionality and Intentionality of Seeking

The Directionality and Intentionality of Seeking

In many ways, we're all seekers. We're curious about what's possible. We're curious as to what's next.

The direction we seek, however, says a lot about who we are committed to being and who we are committed to serving.

It's easy to seek outside ourselves, yet it can be just as easy to learn about what's inside.

It's easy to search for the next thing, yet it's just as easy to be grateful for the last thing.

It’s easy to create for myself, yet it can be just as easy to create for others.

It's easy to ask: how can I improve myself today? Yet it’s just as easy to ask: how can I improve the lives of others today?

There is no one way or right way to seek.

“You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

We must identify our tendencies, and should we care to, bring intentionality to going the other way.

If you typically seek outside yourself, maybe it’s time to look deep inside. Or if you tend to be deeply contemplative, it may be time to collaborate and incorporate community.

If you typically search for the next thing, maybe practicing gratitude for what is will be beneficial. Or if you tend to look backwards, it may be time to bring hope to what’s next.

If you typically create with your own benefit in mind, maybe it’s worth asking how what you create might benefit others. Or if you tend to create for others, it may be time to create what you want to create.

If you typically ask how to improve your own life, maybe it's worth asking how you can do in service to others. Or if you tend to prioritize improving the lives of others, it may be worth ensuring that you’re paying the same care to your own life.

My tendency is to seek outside myself, for the the next thing, as I create for myself and others in service to myself and others. Understanding this I intentionally practice personal reflection and gratitude for what is.

What’s your tendency?
